About
My Architectural Philosophy
CSA believes in Critical regionalism. This philosophy entails fusing the most appropriate elements of modernism (such as structural engineering and the use of concrete, steel, and glass) with analysis and mitigation of local climate issues (sun, shade, rain, heat, and flooding). This process of finding a balance between the two schools of thought has become CSA’s central architectural philosophy.
Architecture doesn’t exist without context. When designing, nature needs to be respected and a central consideration. Where views beyond are framed through an architectural language of simplicity. This creates a dynamic relationship between the organic lines found in nature and the restrained simplicity of CSA’s modern architecture.
Another pillar of my philosophy is to strive for affordability, timelessness, honesty and, therefore, sustainability. CSA advocates the use of modulation, repetition, and simplicity to minimize material use and maximize the speed of fabrication.
History/ Work experience
With my unparalleled skills in technical drawing, combined with an interest in complex math and physics, architecture became a natural direction for me. My keen focus on Design Concepts awarded me both Head of School and Head of Design, and my final year design was submitted to the RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects).
In my final years at university, I focussed on Architecture’s role in Sustainability, leading to the research of various low-tech building methods worldwide. Bamboo stood out as the potential game changer to make a significant impact in reducing the Building Industries’ carbon footprint. CSA follows international research on bamboo material developments and modern design approaches, using both laminated bamboo and natural bamboo poles. I believe there is a future for both forms of bamboo through considered modern design and Critical Regionalism.
Deliberate exposure in several of Queensland’s leading architectural firms over the past twenty years has provided me with unique experience in the broad spectrum of Queensland architecture. This varied experience in many project types, scales, budgets, and contexts has prepared CSA to deal with any challenges.
While primarily working on designs for signature Queensland projects, ranging from the Gold Coast to Cairns, I also played a key role in several large-scale international projects delivered in China and Singapore.
Through CSA, I continue this legacy, of meaningful and climatically suitable modern architecture in Queensland and abroad.
